Play yards are a convenient way to travel with your child and have a safe and comfortable place to sleep or a nice quiet secure place to let small children play in. This is definitely a must have item to have at the top of your new parent wish list. Depending on your lifestyle, a play yard will be one of your most used items! Many fold up very small and are lightweight to make travel easier, and most are slim enough to fit through a standard doorway to make it possible to move the play yard from room to room without having to collapse the play yard.
When choosing the right play yard for your needs it is important to review the size of the play yard and the features it has. Some common options are roll up sides, toy mobiles/gym, wheels, type of fold and compatibility, travel bag, electronic features, changing table and diaper changing station, bassinet, and a nice comfy padded mattress. We have listed some of the common types of play yards below from the most basic to the most fully loaded:
Travel Bed: These are very compact and are meant for sleeping, made for all different ages these provide a great enclosed space for sleep on the go.
Standard: A crib that is designed to be a day or travel bed and is slim enough in size to fit through a standard doorway for easy mobility around the house, usually measures about 28 x 40.
Bassinet/Co-Sleeper: A bassinet that features an open side for easy access to the baby from the baby at the side and can be used as a bassinet and can transition to a play yard.
A few of our favorite travel bed play yards are the Kidco Pea Pod, Kidco Pea Pod Plus, and Phil and Teds Nest and Traveller. For standard size cribs our favorite hands down is the Chicco Lullaby LX! We also like Graco Pack n Plays, GoCrib, Joovy, and Safety 1st. For bassinet and co-sleeper style we are fans of Arms Reach, Graco and Kolcraft.
