Bugaboo began in an attic in 1994 when two men in Amsterdam, Max Barenburg and Eduard Zanen, had an idea and came up with the first Bugaboo stroller. Max had actually came up with the original design as a final project for graduation at design school, he specialized in mobility and designed a city stroller that would work for modern urban parents. Together with Zanen, he applied for a patent right away.
In 1996, upon realizing his design was too advanced for the current market he scaled back and came up with a design with Eduard that focused on modular utility, a compact fold, and two wheel position seat and handlebar. They searched for a manufacturer in but couldn’t find anyone to produce to their standards so they started their own factory in Taiwan to produce their new stroller. The first prototype was introduced in Germany in 1997 with an overwhelming response which prompted them to further enhance the comfort and safety of the stroller, and in 1999 the first Bugaboo Classic became available. It hit the streets of the Netherland’s and officially became the world’s first modular stroller that redefined function, aesthetics and safety for the stroller market. The idea grew with each new stroller that was delivered via word of mouth advertisement, and even became such a special brand among mothers that they would greet one another on the sidewalk the way a Jeep or Harley motorcycle driver greets each other on the road. In 2002 a cameo appearance of a Bugaboo stroller on the HBO hit series Sex and the City launched a U.S. obsession among the trendiest parents in the U.S.A., officially launching Bugaboo in America!
